Scavenging Vehicular Transportation - Does Size Matter?

Does size matter?

When it comes to vehicles - maybe.  For awhile I was driving a two door Mustang (pretty cool, I know).  But as cool looking as a 29 year old out of shape Dad with slightly thinning hair and awful style can look in a Mustang - There was no room to put stuff!  So if all of the sudden on your way home from work you see a giant pile of stuff with a free sign next to it - you can’t take it with you because you have no room! And that sucks.  I’m not saying buy a brand new SUV or pick up - but you might want to consider your vehicle space when it comes to picking up stuff.  The last thing you want to do is drive 20 miles to an auction or yard sale and not be able to leave with anything. But you also don’t want a gas guzzler because you are going to be driving around a lot looking for stuff.  Try to find something that brings together affordability, space and gas mileage. We recently purchased a used Jeep that has seemed to work out pretty well for our purposes, but we are spending more on gas...which brings me to my next point...

TRACK YOUR GAS MILEAGE!!! As tedious and annoying as it may seem, it is a really good idea to start to track your gas mileage.  When you go out 2 or 3 times a week hunting for stuff it REALLY ads up fast. I haven't gone through a tax season yet since my eBay store is only a few months old, but I'm assuming when tax time comes you will get a decent break on gas mileage, and any other business expenses you take on in the first year. Track that mileage!

Items Purchased, Returns, Angry Customers and Intense Sweaty Fever Dreams

Greetings!

Wow, it's been a rough week for me here. I was home a day and a half with my sick daughter then home sick myself with a fever of 104! Slept through most of the weekend in a chilly, sweaty, hallucinating fashion, but I'm feeling a bit better now.  Sold a few things over the week, bought a handful of things for the store and am working on our first 'return' from a buyer as well as a potentially angry customer.  Here goes:

Let's start with the return.  Someone purchased a pair of Red Wing boots from us. They were a size 13, the guy got them and turns out he needs a size 14. He said he'd ship the boots back right away and that they were great boots, just didn't fit. No problem - he pays for shipping both ways and we will relist them.

The potentially angry customer. Someone bought a scuba mask from us and paid for it around 10:30pm on Wed night.  Wed night leading into all day Thursday was my prime time for 104 fever and night terrors...so I somehow gathered the strength to find the computer and print the shipping label Thursday night, but I didn't get the item shipped out until Friday morning.  The buyer emailed me Saturday morning irritated that the tracking information hadn't updated yet and that he was annoyed I hadn't shipped the package yet (which I had).  It didn't get out 'next day' but well below the '3 day' window that eBay suggests. Anyway, I did some customer service work, did not mention my illness at all because he'd probably think it was a lie, and just let him know it was shipped Friday morning and the tracking info just hadn't upated. Looked at my positive feedback from this guy today and it looks like we turned a frown into a 5 star crown. ;) Goes to show - NEVER LOSE YOUR COOL with a customer unless it's an extremely rare case, even then you probably should try to remain as professional and courteous as possible - because my understanding is that eBay will have your back if they read through your messages and see that you were being reasonable and professional.

Items purchased this week.  Not much, but pretty good for a fever stricken' individual:

The Pin-Up by Ralph Stein - Cool 1970's pinup book, not super rare but has a good range of categories including Marilyn Monroe, Playboy, Pin-up, etc. Paid 50 cents (and felt like a creep buying only this item from an otherwise child-friendly sale).
Battery Operated Vintage Tie Rack with lights. This thing was just too cool to let go. It is in working condition and will probably sell to a retro clothes collector who has a crap load of ties. Might have over paid a bit - $3.
Army Green Stearns Life Jacket. Liked this because of all of the pockets and the color. Stearns seems to be a popular brand in the life jacket industry. Out of season around here but it's always sunny somewhere! Paid $3.
Another Tie Rack - This one had the original box and is in nice shape. It says "automatic tie rack" on the box ... yet it is not mechanical at all ... not sure what's up with that ... but I'll take it. Paid 50 cents.
Took a risk on this Calligraphy set. Looks like it's from the 1970s. Pen stuff seems to do well, so I figure why not a Calligraphy set?  Has the original box and instructions ... not sure if I will get much for this or not - paid $1.50.
Vintage decorations. Not in the best shape but I always pick these up when they are cheap to beef up my "lots" of different holiday decor listings. You always want to check for a brand. In this case we have Hallmark and Arrington.  Always be on the look out for Beistle ... that's another good brand. Paid 10 cents each for these.

Snoozing Santa Ceramic Figure with box. Not very old - 1990s, but in great condition and has the box. Christmas is around the corner ... someone will probably buy him. Paid 50 cents.
What??? ANOTHER TIE RACK?  I know ... I'm crazy like that.  This one is known as "The Selectie" and has info about where it is from and everything. We will see if my tie rack binge pays off or not. Paid 50 cents.

The Hartford Insurance Glass Paperweight. Is there a market for this? I dunno. Paid 50 cents.
My favorite find of the week. A 1990's Deluxe Talkboy. I ONLY bought this because it is the same style as featured on Home Alone. I see people listing (and selling) these with "Christmas" or "Home Alone" in the title and people seem to dig it.  We will see if it sells this holiday season or not! Paid $1.

Total Paid for items this week: $11.40
Hoping to make around $175 - $250 on these items.

Happy Hunting!

Taking Photos of Items You are Selling on eBay

Camera and Photos.

A picture is worth a thousand words is not an understatement at all when it comes to selling on eBay.  You need high quality photos and the more professional they look, the better.  It's great to keep in mind that the only way you are selling your items is from your photos and your description. But I would place my money on the photos being more important than the description. Imagine you are the customer and you are looking at the item on a screen. You can't pick it up and turn it around so you want to make sure you photograph as many angles and details AND FLAWS as you can. Don't just highlight the good parts of the item ... you HAVE to show the flaws or your buyers will be pissed.

If all you have is an old digital camera or your smart phone camera - this will work fine for starters.  Use a well lit area for staging your photos (natural light is best) and find some sort of a backdrop for your photos so there isn’t a bunch of empty coke cans and cat in the background.  I have found a white background works best to really showcase your item. When you use a pattern background I personally think it takes away from the item. You want the buyer to see nothing but what they are getting.

We bought a roll of white paper from Office Max for $15 that is doubling as our photo backdrop and paper to wrap our items in so they look nice upon arrival (another tip from the eBay Scavengers).  I did recently find a GIGANTIC projector screen that I bought at a yard sale for $5 that I can’t wait to get home and start using as my backdrop.  Not exactly sure how this will work out. I might still use the paper for small items and use the projector screen for larger items or items on hangers like clothes.

Ultimately if your business starts to bring in a significant amount of money you might want to invest in a nicer digital camera (we have a Canon Rebel that we are very happy with). Also - a Macro lens is invaluable for capturing the details on smaller and more intricate items.

Garage Sale Finds for 8/17/2013

Greetings!

Had a decent day inventory shopping and found a few things for my house too!

You already know I'm a huge sucker for vintage Halloween items. My next biggest weakness is old military related items be it medieval, revolutionary war, civil war, etc.  So this large framed and matted print of "The Bridge" by John Falter was a no brainer for $5. It depicts the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Very nice condition ... this will be a keeper for me.
This marble top and metal table is PERFECT for our living room by our fireplace. I will be keeping this. $5.
Call me crazy ... but this Vintage cat trinket box called out to me for some reason. Copyright Vermont Ltd. Artwork by Balliol Corp. It's just a nice metal and glass piece with a mirror inside. Paid 50 cents. Some cat enthusiast out there WILL buy this eventually.
Vintage Porcelain Vanity Mirror. 50 cents.
Native American Made Pouch with original tag "Made by the Cherokees of Qualla Reservation in Cherokee, N.C." Very cool piece that will sell easily. Paid $1.
 Dr. Martens. Paid $2.
Retro/Vintage looking Disneyland tin tray. Has nice artwork of original Disney characters. Not sure what I'll get for this but paid 50 cents.
Very Large plastic ship vintage wall decor. Paid $2.
Pair of Old Brass/Cast iron Fireplace Andirons or log holders. Super nice find. Paid $2. I kind of want to keep these but I have a gas fireplace and there is really no reason to...so I will probably sell them.
These were a unique find. The woman at the sale said they are from East Berlin, Germany from the 1940s. They have symbols on them  and are marked Bleikristall Handgeschliffen. I will have to do some research on what the symbology means on these. Paid $4 for the pair.
2 Vintage Pipe Holders/Pipe racks. Pipe stuff does pretty well. Paid $3 total for both.
3 vintage metal/iron mirrors/picture frames. Marked "Made in Italy" on the back. Paid $1.50 for the three of them.
Vintage Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer stocking. Paid 25 cents.
Women's Leather Guess Coat. Paid $2. Not vintage, but in nice shape, 100% leather and a name brand. Should sell pretty easily.

Total paid on items for the store: $19.25
Hoping to make around $250 - $300
